Kjersti Timenes : Web Gallery : Textile Art : Funeral Palls

1997 - 98

Norwegian term: Kistetepper

This needs perhaps a bit more explanation:

The use of funeral palls – or burial cloths – is very ancient, and many examples have been found in different parts of the world. Woven or embroidered pieces of textile were spread over the coffin. They where used during the transport from the home to the church, and under the funeral ceremony. It had to be taken off when the coffin was sunken in the grave.

My main question has been: how can the shape and function of burial clothes from the former days be used as a source of inspiration and give ideas for contemporary funeral textiles?

It is primary the Norwegian funeral palls that have been my background, when I have designed and woven five new textiles for contemporary use as funeral palls, all woven in  old well known tapestry-techniques.
